I think it is good to have a page like this, police can present a challenge. I personally shouldn't have anything to fear from the police, but I have developed an anxiety reaction every time I hear their radios they wear. I find when they deal with me they are usually very angry and confusing, I usually don't even know why they are bothering with me. I have been to more narcotics anonymous than any sober person I know. I have an identifying card in my wallet now, I'm not sure if I'd show it to them if I ever had trouble again, because I'm afraid they may think I'm using it as a "get out of jail free" card and I'm really on drugs or something.

Hi Sally,Thanks for saying you agree with having a page like this and I'm glad you like it! LOL, yes their radios can be unsuspecting so I understand where you are coming from there... Sometimes police officers are on guard because Autistic people can act like someone who is on drugs or high because those symptoms can be presented in both cases, so I have dealt with that as well. However, since I have my Autism service dog they are so happy to see that and they are very kind and helpful and don't get 'on guard' because they think I'm high or something due to the symptoms of my Autism or the behaviors I will exhibit. I am a waitress and my husband and autistic son came into the restaurant there is a toy game and my son was throwing a tantrum because we couldn't get the toy he wanted so my husband grabbed him under his arm and took him to the car. as he struggled to get him his booster seat a customer watch through the window we were pretty busy buy the time i noticed him right down my licence plate # my husband was smoking out side the car while my son com ed down i try to explain that my son was autistic but he just screamed at my about how we abused my child he yelled for about 10 min after he left the cops came to my work to talk to me my husband came to pick me up around the same time and my son was at home with grandma as he question us a different cop and cps went to my house to check on him after getting him out of bed and asking if we had any pamphlets???? they left now after that i stop explaining my self and if they want to call the police go ahead i don't give the my name or Phone # but a card that has his regional works name what ever makes them feel better

Hi Kesner,Oh boy, toy games and tantrums... getting fixated on things - totally Autism. Wow, I think that guy did go overboard! Especially after the explanation that your child has Autism. Awareness cards are very good so you can hand them out and a doctor's or OT's number to confirm tantrums and 'not abuse'. Wow, I can't believe they went that far, although officers do have to respond of course as its there duty. What did they mean by pamphlets? You mean on Autism? Wow, that was quite an experience. Did the police understand and was it resolved? Many hugs, Kris Do you find this valuable? |

This is a great thread! My husband has been a police officer in a large city for almost 13 years. I'm sure he would love to get a group of his cop buddies together to visit with families with autistic children, especially since we have an autistic child ourselves. Kesner, I'm so sorry that you felt like you were being questioned for child abuse. When cops get a call that could be child abuse they have to follow several guidelines, CPS is often called just as a precausion. I'm just sorry that the jerk that saw your husband and son felt the need to call the police in the first place! -Melissa Do you find this valuable? |
